The effects of Abhyanga are equated with “being saturated with love” and the warmth, comfort and stability that results from any experience of love. Performing routine Abhyanga is especially nourishing and grounding for Vata dosha but is beneficial for all dosha, especially using dosha specific oils sometimes infused with herbs that are beneficial to a specific constitution or condition. The benefits of oil application (scalp and hair, openings to nose and ears, all areas of skin – face, limbs, trunk, hands feet – even to private parts) are numerous and include: lubrication and enhanced flexibility of muscle, tendons and joints; softness, strength and luster of skin with transdermal absorption of some of the nutrients of the oil used; decreases effects of aging; moves lymph to aid in detoxification and elimination of impurities; increases circulation and stimulates internal organs of body; soothes and nourishes nerve endings; benefits sleep; enhances stamina, immunity and longevity; imparts a firmness to the limbs; bestows good vision; encourages hair to grow thick, soft and glossy; benefits stiff neck and jaw; benefits disorders in/of ear/nose due to increased vata; pacifies vata and pitta and stimulates kapha. The oils maintain the normal pH of the skin (unlike soap) while still pulling away impurities.
